30m Brits head overseas in 2009

The foreign and Commonwealth office and The Association of British Travel Agents have released their research into the travel patterns of the the British holiday maker in 2008 and their predictions for 2009.

The study revealed that over 30m British traveled overseas in 2008, Spain was the most popular choice with France, Italy following close behind. However, the report said that as the Pound falls against the Euro, more will choose destinations outside the Eurozone.

The shift has already been noticed in advance bookings for 2009; interest in the Caribbean, USA, Turkey, Egypt and Mexico is dominating interest. Out of these markets Turkey appears to gain the most from the UK, with the FCO and ABTA predicting that visitor numbers will double to two million by the end of 2009.
