A beautiful country that is picturesque and perhaps frustrating in its lack of modern infrastructure, but this will come in good time, especially as it’s membership of the EU is now completed. Black Sea Coast properties still very popular, but ski resorts, which are improving steadily will be worthwhile for those who are not up to Val d’Isere standard.

Getting there: Plenty of direct flights all year to Sophia, the capital, from regional UK airports. Low cost flights to other tourist destinations are available in peak season.

Buying a property is straightforward; foreigners are still, however, not allowed to buy land. Property prices remain amazingly cheap.

Costs: 2% property tax, legal fees around 3%, agents’ fees between 3% and 10%.
